SUSAN KRAMER MP CONDEMNS GOVERNMENT GO AHEAD FOR RICHMOND PARK CAR PARKING CHARGES
10.49.01am GMT Fri 15th Jan 2010
Susan Kramer, MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston has condemned the Government's decision to give the green light to car parking charges in Richmond Park and Bushy Park.
The MP was notified in a letter received this morning from Tourism Minister Margaret Hodge MP that the decision will be announced at 12pm today (Friday 15th January).
Commenting on the decision, Susan Kramer MP said:
"It is outrageous that the Government is choosing to ignore the strength of opposition to these parking plans.
"There is a long tradition of free access to the Park which will be lost if charges are introduced.
"I am also extremely concerned that the very real worries of residents about displacement of parking onto residential roads have not been taken on board.
"But the battle is not over yet. I will now be working with colleagues in Parliament to try and force a vote on the plans.
"And if charges are introduced, the Liberal Democrats are already committed to trying to reverse the decision after the next general election. We will be seeking this assurance from other political parties as we continue the fight.
"The message I want to give local residents is that the fight is not over yet. I will continue to campaign through every avenue in Parliament and outside to stop these charges being introduced."
It is expected that the plans will be presented to Parliament by the Minister via 'negative resolution'. Susan Kramer MP will then 'pray against' the resolution to try and force a vote.
Susan Kramer is inviting local residents to a protest in Parliament on the day of any vote to show the Government the strength of opposition to the plans. Please do let Susan know your contact details so that she can keep you up to date on the latest developments.
