MP FEARS FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN OVER AVIATION NOISE

3.30.57pm GMT Thu 28th Feb 2008

Susan Kramer MP and Stephen Knight joined children whose education is affected by flight noise to protest against Heathrow expansion.

Susan Kramer, Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond Park, is backing calls to protect schoolchildren from aircraft noise.

The PLANE Campaign (Pupils Learning in Aviation Noise Environments), aims to highlight the problems faced by schools under the flightpath and call for adequate insulation and ventilation.

A delegation of schoolchildren from West London will deliver a letter to the Prime Minister calling for the government to ensure that children living under flightpaths can be educated in environments that are free from noise and disruption.

Susan Kramer is one of a group of MPs who are tabling an Early Day Motion on the subject.

Commenting, Susan Kramer said:

"I support this campaign wholeheartedly.

"An estimated 100,000 children could have their education blighted by noise if the government pushes ahead with plans to build a third runway at Heathrow.

"It is vital we maintain an environment where our children can concentrate without constant noise and disruption. Aviation noise causes havoc with schools as far away as Kew and Barnes. If expansion plans go ahead and runway alternation is lost, it will mean an end to what little respite they get."
