CUT THE CARBON MARCH IN RICHMOND PARK

Written by SUSAN KRAMER MP on Mon 1st Oct 2007

The Christian Aid "Cut the Carbon March" walked through Richmond Park on Sunday from the Kingston Gate to the Roehampton Gate. The marchers started in Ireland in mid-July and have reached London via Scotland and Western England. The March will end with a service at St Paul's Cathedral on Tuesday.

The March calls on the British Government to cut carbon by 80% by 2050; the current Government target is a cut of 60%. Global Warming above 2 degrees C would have a devastating effect on the developing world.

Susan Kramer, MP for Richmond Park, who met the Marchers at the Kingston Gate said: "I am fully in support of their campaign except that Liberal Democrats have set an even higher target of a Zero Carbon Britain by 2050.

"It's easy to forget that the poorest countries in the world are the most vulnerable to climate change so it was impressive to meet marchers from countries like Brazil and Burkino Fasso.

"I am pledged to try and get this tougher target into the Climate Change Bill which the Government will introduce later this year."
